Stop Motion
At the end, I decided to go with stop motion animation as I think it is more
interesting.
Mr Martin also told us to fill in a proposal document that compiles the main
ideas of my project. The proposal is attached her below:
In the proposal above, I basically planned out my entire final project including the basic storyline, shots, progression, story board, etc. This allows me to keep track on what shots I should take in the shooting stage.
Week 8 - 12
I started shooting the stop motion animation.
I decided to shoot it in a dark room with one light from the side that points towards the figurines. I also tried adding another light to lit up the background, but I did not like the effect. So, I proceeded with only one light. I also experimented with other different light settings.
I tried adding a guitar as the background, but I removed it at the end because it would be difficult during the editing process.
I began to shoot picture by picture with the frames per second in mind. My target would be around 6 to 8 frames per second.
Then, I started shooting. While shooting, I made sure the camera was set to the correct settings so that the photos produced will look as consistent as possible. The total number of images shot was 206 images.
After transferring the photos into my computer, I renamed them with consistent file names. This makes it easier for me to identify each photo.
Once that is done, I moved on to remove the rigs in AE and PS.
For most of the scenes, using photoshop, I removed everything in the foreground including the shadows, which leaves only the background. I used the 'Content Aware Fill' function in photoshop. This is something I did not do during the photoshoot stage that would make my life much easier...
Then, I moved to AE to compose the video. Initially, I tried to compose the entire video in a single AE project. However, AE would crash from time to time and made it very unworkable. So, I decided to split them up scene by scene.
When importing the footages, I made sure to set the resolution to Full HD 1080p and 8fps. I ensured this is done for all the footage imported.
Then, I continued to remove the rigs by creating masks, adjusting individual anchor points for each frame. .
After that, I smoothen out the edges as best as I could using the eraser / brush tool if necessary.
I then exported all 6 AE projects as .mov files and JPEG sequences for further editing.
I then imported the 6 clips into Premiere Pro to combine them together. I also did colour correction for all of the footage and added a title scene and ending scene.
Once all the visual editing is done, I looked up for some suitable sound effects and insert them into the timeline. SFX that I used include a variety of punch sounds, a low piano note, footstep sounds, whoosh sound effects, and some cloth / fabric sound effects. I also trimmed the audio clips into smaller clips that fits well with my video.
After I am happy with the sound effects, I proceeded to add the final step, which is the starting screen and the ending screen.
