MIB:
Week 2 Project 1 - Exercise 1: Audio Dubbing
Introduction
For Project 1, we are tasked to do a voice over for a clip from Disney's Soul (2020). Other than our voices, we are also required to put in the hard sound effects and ambient sounds. For the female voice and the cat's voice, I had to adjust the semi tones in the Pitch Shifter audio effect.
Progress
Step 0: Record voice lines.
Step 1: Import all the video and audio files into Premiere pro.
Step 2: Drag the video into timeline.
Step 3: Create 'in' and 'out' points for voice lines.
Step 4: Insert voice lines into timeline accordingly.
Step 5: Find suitable sound effects from https://freesound.org/ and import into Premiere Pro.
Step 6: Trim sound effects and add into timeline.
Step 7: Lastly, add audio effects such as Pitch Shifters and audio transitions at certain parts to make audio sound smoother.
Step 8: Added ambient sounds (trees rustling, light traffic, very subtle bird chirping)
Step 9: Added footsteps sound effects
Week 4 Final Outcome
Project 1 - Exercise 2: Sound Shaping
For this exercise, I am required to create the following sounds using Adobe Audition:
- Voice of phone call.
- Voice coming from inside of closet.
- Voice of toilet/bathroom.
- Underground cave.
For each of these sound effects, I have to tweak them differently so that they would sound in such a way.
Firstly, the voice coming out from a phone call does not have much bass and treble, which only leaves the mid-tones.
For the voice coming from a closet, the EQ is tweaked slightly differently, as it has a more muffled and less echo-ish effect. .
Lastly, to create a sound effect that comes from an underground cave, the voice would have an echo after the sound is played. So, I applied pumping reverb to the clip and customised it using the sliders a little bit.
Project 1 - Exercise 3: Sound Design
For this exercise, I am tasked to create:
- Magnification of EXPLOSION sound
- Variation of PUNCH SOUNDS (Triple punches)
- MONSTER or ALIEN voice (select one part from sample voice)
I will be using Adobe Audition as well and tweak and adjust the sounds to create interesting sounding sound effects.
To magnify the explosion sound effect, I increased to duration (slowed down) the original clip, increased the volume, and adjusted its pitch. I also used the 'Modulation' function.
I created 3 variations of the triple punch sound effect, each giving out a different sound and feel.
Variation 1: 3 strong punches that lands.
Variation 2: 3 super heavy punches that lands, with the last one being the final blow.
FEEDBACK
Week 4, Pre-final Video Feedback
1. Dialogue volume not loud enough (around 0 to -6dB for best results)2. No background ambient noise (throughout the track, around -16 to -20 for best results)
3. Sound effects volume depends on the distance between the camera and the sound maker.
4. Cat's high pitch voice can be more extreme.
5. Man's voice can go deeper.
REFLECTION
In this project, I have learnt to do sound dubbing for the very first time. I had a lot of fun while producing the short clip, especially when tweaking my voice using the pitch shifters. Besides, I also learnt about the levels of volume for different sounds, e.g. dialogues, ambient sounds, background sounds, etc. Overall, this is a very fun and beneficial practice in case I will be doing similar projects in the future.
In exercises 2 and 3, I have the chance to use Adobe Audition for the first time to create various sound effects. I have learnt basic adjustments that changes how the sound actually sound and feels according to a given scenario.
