Weekly Lecture Work

Task

Well designed social awareness visual:

Poorly designed social awareness visual:

These 2 visuals I found online are centred within the character design theme.

The first artwork - 'This is America' is a series of social awareness visual design that uses photo manipulation to create powerful characters that spreads awareness on the topic of racial discrimination. I'd say the visuals/characters are well designed because of the design aesthetic, clarity, and the ability to influence viewers. Personally, I think the striking colours and the writings make the artworks stand out, thus allowing viewers to remember them.

'Not Just Tired' is a design created for the chronic sleep disorder social awareness campaign. The designer created 9 characters, each representing a type of disorder. To be fair, the design is no where near bad, it's honestly great. However, when compared to 'This is America', it lacks clarity and the ability to converse the message is lacking. When paired with descriptions and explanations of each character, only then the message becomes clear to the viewer.

Project Progress (Week 2)

1. Developed a potential new idea.

New Project Idea:

To create a 3D character sculpture that spreads awareness about coral reef conservation.

- The character represents nature / the coral reef. Thus, there will be elements of different types of corals that can be found in Malaysia. Part of its body is slowly getting destroyed by the pollution / threats.

- The design inflicts pity, sadness, negative emotions in general to the viewers in order to have a greater impact towards them.

Reasons why I decided to come up with this new idea...

(1) After doing some research on parallax websites (sites that has unique and cool scrolling effects that causes the foreground and background to move differently), I realised that the coding process is quite complicated. It requires a good understanding in working with HTML, CSS, and even Javascript. which I have little to no experience working with.

(2) I have more interest in the character design and 3D modelling themes, as opposed to website development. I think I will be able to put in more creativity into something I am more familiar with.
