Task 1 - Week 3 Recap

LECTURE

Who am I?

Different people see us differently, For example, our parents see us as their children, which affects our behaviour, actions, opinions, etc. Obviously, our friends see us differently than our parents as well.

Sometimes, we even look at ourselves differently. This is affected by several factors:

Self Portrait

The aim of this project is to create a self portrait. A self portrait can be defined in many many ways.

According to students at Minneapolis College of Art and Design,
"Self portrait is a visual representation of you as a person."
" It does not necessarily need to have your face in it."
"The more you abstract, the more it becomes you."
"A bunch of different colours and shapes."
...and many more.

The proper definition of a self portrait is a visual depiction of the self in the form of a drawing, painting, sculpture, design, or simply something that we can visualize. A self portrait represents how the artist sees himself, what he/she is feeling, and how he/she wants to be seen by others. A realistic artwork is not needed when doing a self portrait, as artists usually carry out this exercise to explore more about themselves.

Ultimately in my opinion, a self portrait does not have a solid definition. It depends on the artist to define it.

Mind Maps

Tony Buzan is the inventor of mind maps. Creating a mind map about the self is a great way to explore more about oneself before creating a self portrait. In the mind map, one can jot down different things relating to oneself. For example, ones' personality, life experiences, struggles, fear, what makes one happy, etc.

Now vs Then

Back then, artists tend to draw more realistic portraits of themselves. For example, Hoessein Enas's Self Portrait (1954) and Gustave Courbet's Le Désespéré (1844-1845) were traditionally rendered in a hyper realistic style. However, in today's world, a self portrait does not necessarily need to be a realistic painting. It could be something that represents us, how we actually see ourselves, etc.

PRACTICAL

Principle of Design 1: Emphasis

Here is my final progression. I added in some details into the wolf.

Then, I started working on the man and the mask.

Final Artwork 1: Arisen

Principle of Design chosen: Emphasis

Concept

The concept of this design is basically a character wearing a powerful mask, which has a wolf's soul living inside of it. During the ancient times of war, the ancient mask was worn by warriors, believing that the mask provides great demonic powers to them. each mask contains a soul (in this case a soul of a wolf). When activated, the soul takes over the warrior, granting immense power. In the right hands, its power can be used to change people's lives for the better. However in the possession of wrong hands, the misuse of its power is enough to destroy half a nation's popularity.

Reflection

Score: 3.8/5. Overall, I am quite satisfied with how the piece came out. I like the way the wolf looks dominant and majestic in the frame. However, I feel like there are many things that I can still improve on:
  1. More vibrant colours. Although this artwork came out great, the colours seem a little too dull to my preference.
  2. More prominent strokes, especially when painting fur.
  3. Improve and practice more on human anatomy.

Final Artwork 2: Woman

Principle of Design chosen: Figure Ground + Contrast

Concept

Why have I decided to paint a woman's face? In my opinion, women is one of the most significant things in the world. Think about it, without women, we wouldn't even exist right now. This design is to appreciate the existence of women while looking at how beautiful the facial features are. For this design, I have decided to draw the face of a woman only using 2 colours -- black and white. I decided to switch things up a little by using a "white pen on black paper" instead of the ordinary "black pen on white paper" method for this one.

Reflection

Score: 3.5/5. Overall, this piece came out quite okay with clear portray of contrast between black and white. However, the only thing I would like to improve on is the quality of my brushstrokes.
