Project 2: Character Detailing and Texturing

INSTRUCTIONS

MIB

"
You are to continue with the previous sculpt from Project 1 to further enhancement. You may add sufficient details and textures to the character sculpt by utiliziing thorough studies of anatomy principles in your sculpt. Details should uplift the character persona which will add visual narrative to the output produced. Below are the list of components to be achieved in this project:
  1. Character Persona
  2. Skin Details
  3. Scars and bumps
  4. Creases
  5. Color implementation
  6. Light setup
  7. Final Render
"

First Attempt:

Below is my first attempt that did not go so well. The design looks too simple with very little accessories. Furthermore, certain parts of the anatomy is slightly off. The skin is also not smoothened properly.

Second Attempt:

So, for the second attempt, I decided to look for existing characters which are similar to mine. One main reference for me was 'Sifu', a run based beat 'em up video game. The characters from this game are stylised and is similar to the style that I am going for.

After having a better image in mind, I proceeded with the sculpt.

FEEDBACK

Week 12: First attempt

"The muscles anatomy is slightly off, especially the back muscles (too protruded). The feet are too flat, there should be some volume to it."

REFLECTION

I'd say this project is a bittersweet experience for me, though mostly bitter. As ZBrush is still relatively new to me, there are many functions that I am not familiar with. Even after watching tutorials on Youtube, I sometimes could not grasp how things work. But ultimately, the satisfaction at the end was pretty sweet, especially seeing a grey lifeless model into a coloured one.
