REFLECTION
Experience
Overall, my experience with this Typography module was a good one. To me, typography is a new thing to learn and I have definitely gained new and useful knowledge about it from this module. Though hectic at times, I enjoyed completing the designs most of the time. I had the most fun completing the final task because I was given the freedom to use more obvious graphical elements compared to the other tasks. Creating my own typeface was also pretty fun to do. A lot of time was spent in completing all the tasks as I mostly find myself in the situation of 'trial and error', which I think designers cannot escape from.
Observation
To be honest, I am aware that I procrastinate due to the hectic work process at times. I sometimes even question myself if I am putting too much effort and time into a single task. 'Giving up' is also asomething that crosses my mind from time to time. 'Argh, I think I'd be better off doing a simpler one instead.' 'Why do I make my life so hard.' But I am glad that I stayed determined and fought off the urge to give up.
Findings
In my opinion, the point of doing these assignments is for us, as students, to practice and learn. Awarded marks are not as important as creating a design that the designer himself/herself is satisfied with. Another thing I learnt in typography is that: not only a design have to look good, but it also have to be easily readable while conveying the correct message. Because of this, a good typographer has to think thoroughly during the design process. As a more artistic person who enjoys drawing complicated artworks, I find myself trying to simplify my ideas when working with typography. Lastly, observation skills are also a key to successful designs in my opinion. Small details can go a long way.
